A Doula is a Greek word meaning “woman who helps women”. In South Africa Doulas are also known as Childbirth Companions. These are women who offer continual emotional and physical support to labouring woman (and her partner) in the form of comfort, reassurance and gentle touch.

WOMBS is the only registered doula association body of trained doulas in South Africa.

WOMBS Doulas have completed and passed the Johnson & Johnson Birth Companion program.

WOMBS is an organisation representing trained doulas who are committed and motivated to promote and protect antenatal support, active labour and birth and/or provide postnatal support.

WOMBS believes that parents should be empowered to make informed decisions about labour, birth and postnatal care for their families and have access to health care systems which support their choices.

WOMBS works towards these objectives with their Scope of Practice and Code of Conduct.
